Birth Art
Have you ever visited a museum or seen the drawings on rocks and caves of many centuries ago?
Have you ever been moved to tears by a great movie because it reminded you of a deeper truth?
Birth art can help those who are either pregnant or have already given birth learn more about themselves, and dig a bit deeper into their preparation for their upcoming birth, or revisiting their previous birth experience in a deeper fashion.
We are accustomed to communicating and thinking in linear fashion with words and numbers which are really symbols for something else…and they engage the cerebral cortex part of our brains, or the left side of the brain. However, there are other ways of thinking and being and communicating. The right side of our brain is often considered the creative part of our brains, it is also where our beliefs and memories are stored.
There are many modalities to access this part of ourselves that we don’t always encounter on a daily basis. Music and movies sometimes touch our hearts on this subliminal, almost subconscious level. Art is one of those ways that we can get in touch with ourselves in a new way. In some ways, even if you are an artist, it can be a journey into the unknown.
You don’t have to be an artist to do Birth Art. This is not about what you draw. It is perfectly fine if you haven’t drawn anything since you were five or six and left kindergarten. This is not about drawing the masterpiece that you will hang in your living room. As a matter of fact, you don’t have to share your drawing with anyone else unless you choose to do so.
This is not art therapy. I will not interpret what my clients will draw. This process is about allowing them to see where language may not take them, and the naked eye may not see.
In many ways, Birth Art is about birth. New parents are birthing themselves as a parents or grandparents. I have also worked with siblings of the new baby as well as mothers and fathers who gave birth to their children many years ago. Birth is also about the unknown, and the right brain is activated as families go through labor and delivery and postpartum. You might have heard people refer to birthing women being in Laborland. Just as we prepare the nursery for the new baby to come home to, we can prepare this sacred space for Mom and Dad and Grandparents too, and make it a safe place to come to either before or after giving birth.
